will a kick start work If my scooter wont start? I am not having success…?

by admin on September 2, 2010

Just bought a new batt. All the lights are bright so there is plenty of juice. It makes noise when i press the ignition but it won’t start… sort of like it has no fire. I am not having success with the kickstart. Maybe it is broken? The kickstart is sticky and doesn’t spring back. I kick it all the way to the end and it slowly crawls back up.
it has no clutch or gears. it is a 4 stroke

Does your scooter have actual gears and a clutch?Or is it a single gear?If it has a clutch then try jump starting it.

There is a part of the engine like a cellanoid in a car for scooters and motorcycles, i really can’t be more specific I saw this issue once, it it like the distributor it has “Brushes” as they call them and they make the proper flow of electricity from the battery to the motor.
It is usually built into the motor as a complete part it has a cover plate about the size of your palm and a couple screws, and inside are the workings.
Most times starting will not work if you do not have this part working.
This would be the first thing you should check.
As for kick starting it you may try it to see, or you could roll down a short hill in neutral and depress the clutch and shift to gear 1 popping the clutch it should fire. If it doesn’t then you need to replace the other thing I mentioned. Kick starting may not work at all if the cellanoid is not working.

Have you checked for spark at the plugs? you can spin the engine all day long with the start button or kick start but no spark, no fuel, no compression = no start.

check the compression and spark plug.

An engine will never start until it has a spark

That sound you hear is the starter relay actuating. The starter relay might be faulty or the cables that connect either the battery to the relay or the relay to the starter might be loose or faulty. It could even be a bad starter. The easiest way to tell is to connect a single jumper cable to the larger electrical lug on the starter. Then tap the other end of the cable on the positive terminal of the battery. If the starter cranks then the starter is ok and the problem is with either the relay of cables.
To temporarily fix the kick starter you can try spraying the shaft that the kick start lever is attached to with a penetrating oil.
