Is there a easy to ride, dependable alternative ? I need to get from the train station the 1/4 – 1/2 mile to the gym and my job

Honestly, I would just get a bike.
A bike is a lot easier to ride than a scooter, and will get you there faster.
You could probably find a cheap and decent bike on ebay, craigslist or freecycle.
Craigslist is probably your best bet, though.
