Electric Scooter Motor Test

by admin on September 5, 2010

Typical 250 watt Chinese made scooter motor I took off an electric scooter that was junked. I’m testing this using a car battery charger with a capacitor in parallel to smooth the charger output. I may eventually use this on a homemade scooter or pocket-bike Maker: Unite Motor Co LTD Model MY1016 Permanent Magnet DC 24 vdc 14amp 250 watt 2500RPMs

That looks like it came off of one of those little Razor scooter’s. I found one at my garbage dump a while back. It’s missing the seat and the charger input .. thingy. Everything else is there and seems to work though. Just can’t charge the batteries 8(

make a wind generator to add to the solar kit.

solysol5 September 5, 2010 at 6:25 am

ok thanks but before you put the capacitor in the circuit, did the motor stop repeatedly?

Came out of a CRT monitor; forgot the value but it was the largest one on the board.

what type of capacitor did you use?

je this motor would make a good generator to bad its expensive to do that great demo

Yup, thats what I was thinking. The ‘speed’ meter is some sort of ammeter I believe and even with 1/4 throttle it seems to pulse up to the max which seems to confirm what you are saying.

Sounds like you likely have some shorted or burned out windings.

Shoot, now I’m not sure if my motor is bad or the new controller. The wires to the motor get warm pretty quick, the motor gets hot quick and it starts to smoke after only about 3 mins of use on a scooter and it never produces enough power to pull me(I don’t weigh much) up my own driveway or even go 10mph. It makes a jerky pulling feel when going up the driveway. It seems to have more resistence than I expected. I might just have to pull the motor apart and look signs of burned out components.

Mine actually has a bit of resistance when I turn it which I believe are from the magnets.

I have the MY1016 that is rated for 36volts 350watts as part of a scooter that was a POS ugly piece of yellow plastic more or less, the controller was dead so I replaced it and with a new one and I get very little torque from the motor and found out that the old controller died because the motor was shot. The motor produces very little torque in a jerky fashion under load and smokes after a few mins, seems normal w/o load. Does/did your motor spin freely or is there some drag when not powered?

RamoneTalarico September 5, 2010 at 11:27 am

yes it would and because the typical bmx (from an 80s point of view lol)wheel is 16” you would have much torque..

chasenbb September 5, 2010 at 12:02 pm

how much torque does that motor have?

BOSSJJOS September 5, 2010 at 12:39 pm

same with me my scooter

boomy818 September 5, 2010 at 1:24 pm

rodstartube September 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm

jimmymagnum07 September 5, 2010 at 2:58 pm

nohope112 September 5, 2010 at 3:44 pm

i have exactly the same

yuandrew September 5, 2010 at 3:49 pm

They show up on eBay a lot or you can purchase one from electricscooterparts(dot)com.

guimbadriver September 5, 2010 at 4:31 pm
