E scooter keeps blowing a fuse. Please help! This means alot to my kid.?

by admin on May 20, 2011

I bought my daughter an e scooter and when she pushes the gas all of the way down the fuse blows or breaks in it. THe fuse is hot when we take it out. The scooter will go until she pushes the gas down all of the way. Please help, this means alot to my child. I think she loves this scooter more than she lvoes me. So if you have a clue as to what it could be or where or how we can get a manual or find a shop for it in or near Frankfort Ky/Lexington ky. That would really help, thanks for looking

The short answer is the fuse blows from an overloaded electrical circuit. At full throttle, the circuit is overloaded. Probably because the motor’s draw is too much.

Have you tried to run it at full throttle WITHOUT a load? Like in grass or something that will have little rolling resistance, but have some to keep the thing from freespinning too much? Try that. If the result is the same, a blown fuse, then do something to restrict the throttle a little to keep it from happening. If it does not blow the fuse, then what’s happening is the motor draws more than the circuit can handle when loaded. Restricting the throttle a little will work. Or you can get the motor checked out, but I doubt it’s worth the money to have an electrical shop do that.

Keep the battery charged.

As the battery get used, the voltage drops, but the motor still wants the same amount of energy (watts) to run the scooter.

This causes the amperage to rise to the point the fuse blows.

Example: A 100 watt motor on a fully charged battery (13.5 to 13.8 volts) will draw about 7.5 amps and a 10 amp fuse will work just fine.

But if the voltage drops to 10 volts then the motor will try to pull 10 amps and will blow the fuse.

Keeping the battery charged when not in use may fix your problem.
